Medical Laboratory Technician

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) assures that care is delivered to all patients within established legal, ethical, laboratory and hospital guidelines. They will be responsible for have excellent communication skills and exhibit professional behavior at all times.  Institute appropriate interventions according to department policy and procedure, facilitate patient flow and communicate relevant information to the appropriate health care providers, the patient and the family. Facilitate use of the appropriate resources for support.  Perform all laboratory procedure with accuracy, competently with assurance that they have provided for support documentation of the appropriate education and experience and have received the appropriate training for the type and complexity of testing performed.  Standard testing personnel qualifications. Treat all co-workers and patients with respect and confidentiality.  Perform all maintenance, quality control and patient testing with all safety issues and patient identification as required.  Maintain communication between all shifts of any instrument problems, pending work of important issues.  Perform to the best of their ability at all times.  There must be a continued evaluation of responsibilities and methods with recommendations for expansion of the profession. Must be capable of working in a busy and stressful environment along with demonstrating patience, utilizing appropriate judgment.  Must be a team leader producing the highest quality results within the established turnaround time. The hazards are constant exposure to blood borne contamination due to aerosols, needle sticks and spills.  Must wear protective covering according to laboratory policy, infection control and safety practices.  Must be capable of meeting the physical demands, which include standing, walking, bending, lifting and transporting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. An Associate’s degree in a Chemical, Biological, Physical science or in medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent with registration/eligible as a Medical Tech/ or equivalent; with current registration through one of the licensed agencies is preferred, and/or an equivalent combination of experience, education and with the eligibility for high complexity testing.

or

Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupation specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

2. Training and experience in moderate and high complexity testing required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results employing awareness of the factors that influence test results. Patient testing is performed by the employee.. All supportable educational documents and proof of registration must be presented and filed in personnel folder before in patient testing is performed. This documentation must be reviewed and approved by the Director of the laboratory prior to patient testing.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY:

Medical Technician (MLT) Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent is required.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of two years of general clinical laboratory experience in the all major specialties is preferred but recent graduates from accredited schools may be considered.

POSITION:

Full-time weekday evenings, with possible rotating weekend shifts
